What is an Apostille Stamp and Legalisation?

Apostille or Legalisation is the process by which an attachment of Apostille to a UK public document or a public record is applied. In simple terms, Legalisation is the official authentication of a signature, seal or stamp on a public document.

If you are in possession of an original official copy of either a Birth Certificate, Death Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Adoption Certificate, Decree Absolute, court documents or other photocopies certified by a practising legal Solicitor or Notary Public, just click the issuing territory below and place an order for an Apostille.

Why do documents need to be Legalised?

If in need to use a UK or Irish public document in an overseas country, then you may well find that the local authorities require it to be a Legalised document before they will accept it. Each foreign country will have its own legalisation requirements (please see further below).

What information is contained on an Apostille?

  • If the document has been sealed/stamped instead of signed then the details of the authority

  • Authorised signature of authority

Diocuments signed by a Solicitor or Notary Public

Some documents may require the certification of a UK Notary Public or Solicitor before they can be submitted to us for Legalisation. If the document requires the certification or signature of a Notary Public or Solicitor, the UK practising Notary Public / Solicitor must action this within in the United Kingdom.

If a UK Notary Public or Solicitor practising within the United Kingdom is signing a document, he / she should state clearly what exactly it is they are certifying in relation to the document. They must sign in their own name and not use a company signature. They should clearly print their name and their firm's name under the signature.

Please note, some countries only recognise documents notarised by a qualified Notary Public. Some countries, such as the USA, Canada and Australia contain individual States, and each has its own law system.

Photocopy Documents:

We can legalise photocopies of certain types of documents as long as they have been certified in the United Kingdom by a qualified and practising United Kingdom Notary Public or Solicitor. Please note that this does not include Birth, Death, Marriage, Adoption and Civil certificates. If you want to Legalise a certified photocopy of a particular document which can ben Legalised, you should also confirm with the authority in the destination country requiring the legalisation that a certified photocopy is acceptable to them.
